Kristen McMenamy for Vogue Italia August 2010 by Steven Meisel

For a fashion magazine, Vogue Italia never shys away from making social commentary with their editorial content. From capturing the Twitter phenomenon to the economic recession, Vogue Italia always pushes the limits. For its latest issue, the publication tackles the recent Gulf oil leak through the lens of Steven Meisel. Styled by Karl Templer and starring cover girl Kristen McMenamy covered in oil and waste, the 24 page spread offers a fashion spin on the crisis with Water & Oil.

It's an awesome marriage of current affairs and fashion to disprove the common claim that fashion is frivolous. Pretty disturbing but that's the point right?

I really don't like this. I don't see the artistic side, more like taking advantage of something incredibly sad

    • lisette

agreed. as a gulf coast resident, this is insensitive and tacky. although it is very pretty, mcnamy looks dead in some of the images and people forget that there are folks who really did die during the explosion. and also i dont want to see tarred feathers, the gulf coast ecology is completely ruined because of this disaster. no steven miesel editorial can make people forget that the economy and environment of these states is in shambles, that people will never be able to put their lives back together.

this is so wrong… how can anyone try to advertise fashion or whatever using that terrible incident? probably i just don't get it or something

    • http://heyhereyougo.blogspot.com/ Laura

It isn't trying to advertise fashion using the terrible incident at all. Rather it's commenting on the disgusting-ness of the whole thing.
If this kind of disaster had affected humans (like Meisel portrays in this series), we would perhaps realise the disasters we are creating through our own actions everyday. The affect this disaster has on the girls shown in the pictures is meant to liken the effect of our everyday actions on the environment and the creatures living in it – for whom we usually pay no heed.
In a sense, it comments (with sarcasm and irony) on our detachment and uncaring nature for the consequences of our actions – on not just ourselves but more importantly on the earth as a whole.

All this is captured with dramatic beauty and high-gloss fashion thrown into the mix. Meisel is a such a genius.
And Vogue Italia have such guts releasing something as groundbreaking and provocative as this – they use fashion as a means for more than just looking good (though that is always fun too, of course) or materialism .

Though your initial reaction of "this is so wrong" totally sums up the response Meisel/Vogue Italia were perhaps aiming for, in order to make us do a double take, to give this more than a few seconds thought.
The initial reaction of those that say this is disgusting, or disturbing, or horrible – that is what we should be feeling about the topic at hand; that is the whole point, no?

I agree, it's wrong. But they get attention.
Actually I think it's only natural that fashion magazines are influenced by what happens in the world. But when they try to make it look beautiful, then it doesn't feel right.

Why do fashion and social commentary have to be mutually exclusive? Why can't this be both? Of course there's always going to be a fine line between social commentary and basic exploitation for sales when it comes to something as resonating and heartbreaking as the oil spill but the way I see it is, are people really going to be rushing out to buy any of the clothing featured in this editorial? Or are they going to sit back and be upset, disgusted or any of the other words people are using to express their dislike over this shoot, by the real life devastation.

meisel using his medium to document a current incident, i think its interesting and further highlights the oil spill, the model is trapped in the disaster…. theres no levity in the images rather they tell the sad story, i think kristen does a good job here too… there is fashion involved but it is subtle, i challenge anyone to look at these and see a glorification of the gulf…

All fashion photography is ultimately an advertisement for clothes.
If the idea is to bring attention to the horrible effects of the oil spill but at the same time in the bottom corner it reads- Coat- Gucci £1,039…. then you are using the incident to promote fashion and clothes sales not the other way around.
If Steven Meisel and Vogue Italy want to make a point or help there are plenty of other ways they could do this without selling luxury clothes in the process.

regardless of whether or not this editorial is "disguisting" or "artistic", it's so great to see somebody doing an editorial for a powerful fashion magazine that discusses issues other then nudity and sex (which i love and am in favor for all the way) but this is something you don't see everyday. it's brave! this editorial makes me think of all the poor, powerless animals that die because of oil spills :( . it's finally something that doesn't appeal to business and profit but to humanity. it's not beautiful but it's true and sad and i love it for that very reason

Everyone is complaining how this ed glorified the oil spill. It doesn't! sure the clothes are expensive, but its not like she is strutting around in an Elie Saab Couture gown playing with the oil. She looks extremely damaged by the oil which mirrors all the wildlife from the coast. I think this is an extremely powerful editorial that will raise awareness about the oil spill

Of course a campaign like this is going to receive mixed opinions.. It's very well executed but makes me think of "Derelique" from Zoolander, which in the same regard ultimately undermines fashion, regardless of how poignant or innovative it 'thinks' it might be.

I really like it, but I think it's pathetic.

    Amazing social commentary.

Unfortunately, yes, they do have to list the brand names and pricing, but that is standard procedure. An agreement is made when the designers lend the stylists their clothes that the items must be credited, there's no way around that.

Even if they have to do it in a way that is "promoting" clothes and making money off of a tragedy, at least they are using whatever medium they have to make the statement at all.

The oil spill, as tragic as it is, has inspired Meisel, the stylist, hair & make-up, even the model, to say something about it and in turn create something beautiful – isn't that what fashion is all about?

I think this is great. The model looks like she's dying and suffering in each shot, and they didn't glamourize it. It shows the pain of the animals and people. I don't think this is insensitive at all–in fact, I think it brings attention to the disaster. This editorial will bring to light the terrible things that happened and I think that is a good thing.
Would you rather just have a typical photoshoot of a pretty girl, or one that evokes feelings and thoughts and may not be typically "beautiful" like this one?
And clearly it's already evoking thoughts.

    Disturbing.

But considering that's probably the feeling this was meant to evoke, I have to applaud its execution. I do agree that mixing this with high fashion is a little off though, the juxtaposition of raising awareness about the oil spill versus selling extremely expensive clothes doesn't sit so well with me.

Artistically speaking this is staying at a first grader level. Come on : Putting a model on oily rocks all along and adding some smoke to make us cry about our shitty human condition ??!!! This is cute but surely not stunning or even innovating in any way. Fashion speaks to the masses once again but not with great intelligence. I am sorry but when fashion speaks about sex, religion, society or global warming it is always by going full frontal and they think this is going to be enough to be provocative.
