Mugler’s Insect Fall – For fall 2012, Mugler creative director Nicola Formichetti looked towards the archives for inspiration with Thierry Mugler’s 1997 “Insect” collection. The new season plays with arthropod shapes, featuring winged shoulders, furry sleeves, high slits and insect-like cut outs. A color palette of mostly black and white lets the shapes of autumn stand out. For the final section of the show, Formichetti sent out a parade of all black with lightweight hoods and sheer sleeves.

Prada’s Technicolor Fall – One of the most highly anticipated shows of Milan Fashion Week, Prada, presented its fall 2012 collection on Thursday. Miuccia Prada placed focused on modified pantsuits, tailored coats and graphic prints for the new season. Opening with stark black looks, the Italian designer embellished coats and pants with beads or large jewelry pieces. As the collection progressed, color was introduced in the form of geometric patterns ranging from deep purple to orange marmalade. Moving on from last season’s pastel hues, Prada reinvented sixties staples such as long vests, tailored suiting and platform heels for the modern woman. Beauty for the show was almost as bold as the clothing itself, with models sporting ombre hair and smokey raccoon eyes for the new season.

Gone for a Ride – Herve Leger by Max Azria’s fall 2012 collection was equestrian inspired with a hint of motorcycle culture thrown in for good measure. Beginning with a strong black, models hit the runway in body conscious ensembles cinched at the waist. Keeping with the equestrian theme, Leger’s signature bandage dresses were accented by leather harnesses, fringe and gladiator style boots. The hard look was softened with graphic prints, peekaboo cutouts and fur-adorned cropped jackets. Certainly not for the faint of heart, the fall collection is made for a woman who dares to walk on the rebellious side.
