Despite all the controversy surrounding the recent Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Vogue cover, it almost didn’t happen. As WWD notes, the reality television star was set to star on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar US and Vanity Fair before the Anna Wintour helmed magazine. “According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Kardashian had been in serious talks since the fall with Bazaar, which had slated the reality star for its February cover,” writes Alxandra Steigraid. The pitch for the Bazaar cover was reportedly to be photographed by Terry Richardson and include close-up beauty shots since Kim was pregnant at the time.

As you may know, the February cover went to Canadian model Daria Werbowy, a surprising move for an American fashion magazine. As for Vanity Fair, the cover would have also been photographed by Annie Leibovitz but the editorial team was “split over whether it should put Kardashian on the cover.” With Vogue embracing the Kardashian family (they also featured Kim’s younger sister Kendall Jenner on its website), it will be interesting to see whether other fashion publications follow suit in the future. Despite the mixed reviews on social media and celebrity reactions, it’s no doubt one of the most talked about covers of the year.
