On growing up: “I didn’t grow up thinking I was pretty; there was always a prettier girl than me. So I learned to be smart and tried to be funny and develop the inside of me, because I felt like that’s what I had.”

Inside the issue, Kerry wears black and white looks from the new collections.

On family: “I just want [daughter Isabelle] to know that she’s heard. Really heard, because I feel like that is what we all really want. When I think about any of the missteps in my life that I’ve made, all of which I’m grateful for, it’s because I just so wanted to be truly seen and heard for who I am and was afraid I wasn’t or wouldn’t be. I see you, I hear you, I’m with you as you are.”

On Olivia Pope: “I don’t think I consciously say, ‘What would Olivia Pope do?’ but there’s a new thread of belief in my own capacity that I think comes from her. She makes it happen. She figures it out. She fixes it.”

  1. Though Kerry is undoubtedly a beautiful woman having the sense at an early age to develop the gifts that GOD gave her on the inside allowed her in my opinion, “to get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside” as Lupita Nyong’o stated at the 2014 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. Because Kerry has gotten to this deeper business she is able to teach and entertain others (the world and especially her child) in a way that overtly and sometimes subliminally matures society on what is possible by folks that were thought to not be able to bring as much to the table. With the ratings success of headlining Scandal I’m eager to see what creative choices can be made with a little more power that comes with success. I haven’t seen even close to most of Kerry’s projects but maybe my favorite role was the one she played in the movie One Song. The role had the kind of texture to it that I love from a good thespian’s performance. And SNL – The comedic timing is on fleek!

Then jump behind the cam and let’s see what you’ve got!
