Is your wardrobe feeling a bit drab? We’re not bashing on Old Navy (those prices are unbeatable!), but an assortment of basic tees and denim jeans won’t make you stand out in a crowd. Having a collection wardrobe staples is A-Okay (even encouraged), but the key is elevating your everyday pieces to look like a well-polished fashionista. If you’re interested in upping your fashion game, we’ve got a few tips as to how you can do so—conveniently, using the pieces you already own.

Defining “Basic”

Before we get started, let’s make sure we understand what basic staple is. A staple is a regular and important feature of your wardrobe; they’re your trusty go-to’s which complement everything, and as such should be neutral in tone with a safe silhouette. Your staples should also be of high enough quality to withstand everyday wear. Shopping at Forever 21 is fine, but don’t expect those threads to carry a long lifespan. Basics will never go out of style, so you won’t regret investing in them. Here are the top essential items that should be in every woman’s closet, and how you can wear them more creatively to up your fashion ante.

The Plain White Tee

A truly season-less must have and a blank canvas for wearing multiple fashion trends—even at once. Faux fur, suede minis, and mules won’t feel over-the-top when paired with this staple. Basically, it’s your secret weapon when you can’t choose between several bold options.

A Button-Down Blouse

Repurpose that classic office blouse with a trendier twist. Try layering it beneath a cardigan for a collared, preppy look. For flirtier flair, release the bottom few buttons and tie a cropped knot, or go for a retro look by tucking it into a high-waisted skirt.

Your Favorite Jeans

Those flattering jeans you love so much can be taken up a notch for a stylish statement. Pair them with a strong shoulder jacket, statement shoes, or chunky knits for a fashion-forward look.

(Little) Black Dress

It doesn’t have to be little; you can rely on boho, tank, and skater dresses.. These favorites can be worn for a million and one occasions—from work to happy hour and everywhere in between. When you’re trying to achieve more glam, pair your black dress with some really cool watches or statement necklaces and you’ll have an outfit that looks fresh every time.

Classic Denim Jackets

Otherwise known as America’s sweetheart, a jean jacket can also be worn for a girl’s night out. When adorned over a fancy jumpsuit and killer heels, your denim topper can save you on cool, downtown evenings.

Leather Jackets

A classic leather jacket needn’t always be bold. Think outside the box and pair it with a romantic dress to add a new dimension to your look. A ruffled high-to-low dress a moto jacket can lend the ultimate Free People aesthetic.

Black Blazers

All work, no play is not the case for this staple. Jeans can make them weekend appropriate, while a sheer, lace top can turn you into a sexy girlboss.

Fresh White Sneakers

Everyone needs some basic tennies, keep in mind you can pair them with way more than casual outfits. For a dressier look, try them with a boxy military-style jacket or lace-detailed trousers.

Ballet Flats

The slip-ons are invaluable and can complement any outfit. When paired with a midi skirt you’ll achieve an uber-feminine look, or go Parisian chic and wear them with cropped jeans and striped three-quarter sleeve shirt. If you want to go bold, find red flats and add a dash of color to any standard ensemble.

If you want to fully refresh your wardrobe, simply swap out your basics for a new batch of staples. Otherwise, simply combine what you already own with strategic pairings and revamp your wardrobe. Remember, life (and fashion!) is always a balancing act, so pair these staples accordingly to up your sense of style.
