For his fall-winter 2017 collection, Marc Jacobs found inspiration in hip-hop. After watching the documentary series, ‘Hip-Hop Evolution’, the American designer paid tribute to the genre with the latest season. The fall season spotlighted layered looks starting with roomy jackets worn over baggy trousers and sweaters. Jacobs’ fabric of choice was corduroy. From pants to jackets, the retro fabric cements the collection’s 80’s vibe. And when the Marc Jacobs woman wants to show some skin, there are thigh-high slip dresses or embroidered skirts. For footwear, platform shoes and sleek, calf high boots deliver. Finishing the look are backward baseball caps, cloche hats, beanies and gold chains made with artist Urs Fischer.

“As a born and bred New Yorker, it was during my time at the High School of Art and Design when I began to see and feel the influence of hip-hop on other music as well as art and style,” Jacobs says in the show notes. “This collection is my representation of the well-studied dressing up of casual sportswear. It is an acknowledgement and gesture of my respect for the polish and consideration applied to fashion from a generation that will forever be the foundation of youth culture street style.”
