Incorporating Women’s Shorts into Fashion Looks

Shorts are a must-have as designers have sent models sashaying down the runway in everything from ultra-short shorts to voluminous Bermudas at recent fashion shows.

2023 Fashion Week proves that women’s shorts have a place in high fashion, not just something to wear while roughing it in the great outdoors or lounging at home.

LA-based brand Sanctuary shares that while some of these looks may be difficult to pull off in real life, there are many stylish ways to wear various types of women’s shorts that would be perfect for your lifestyle. Here is how to incorporate shorts into high-fashion looks.

Denim Shorts

Denim shorts are practical, classic, and easy to style, so they should be a part of every woman’s wardrobe. You can throw on a pair of jean shorts with a t-shirt and call it a day, but choose the right pair to elevate your look.

To look fashion-forward, pick super short, distressed shorts with a frayed hem, or choose relaxed-fit jean shorts that end just above the knee. You can select light or dark-wash denim shorts, but avoid anything with fussy details like embroidery, studs, rhinestones, etc.

Pair your shorts with something that gives you some coverage on top. Wear your jean shorts with a slouchy sweater or a blouse or shirt under an oversized blazer during the fall or winter. Wear tights for warmth, then add boots, a beanie, and a bucket bag.

For summer, denim shorts look great with an off-the-shoulder boho top or a crocheted top over a tank top. Finish the look with cute wedges, a straw tote, and round sunglasses.

Want to be comfortable yet stylish at the same time? Mid-length shorts with a slight shape are your best bet. Wear it with a sleeveless or short-sleeved button-down and sneakers for a preppy look – it’s a great outfit when it’s hot and muggy outside. Pair your shorts with a cozy hoodie or a cable knit sweater on chilly days.

Leather Shorts

Most people think making leather shorts look good is hard, especially if you do not have model-like proportions. But in reality, anyone can wear them, and they are an excellent piece to have if you like to look chic and put together for social events.

Here is an expert tip: selecting leather shorts that fit you well is the key. Your shorts should be tight enough, loose, and short. Pick ones that are a little loose around the legs, and if your shorts have belt loops, that is even better since that gives you more styling options.

Let your inner rock star loose by pairing your leather shorts with a vintage concert tee or a top studded with grommets or dark rhinestones. Add knee-high boots or combat boots and a studded sling bag. Remember to put on some eyeliner and red lipstick to complete the rock star image!

Wear leather shorts with an avant-garde or statement top if your vibe is more Carrie Bradshaw than Joan Jett. A silky or satin button-down shirt in a bright color, like hot pink or acid green, will work too – leave the top four buttons open, then pull the shirt to one side to expose one shoulder. Finish your outfit with subtle or statement jewelry, a quilted clutch, and stilettos.

Sweat Shorts

If you want a pair of soft and comfy shorts that will make you feel relaxed day to night, look no further than sweat shorts. This type of women’s shorts is perfect for lounging or sleeping, but you can also dress up for entertaining friends at home, running errands, or outdoor activities.

Pick ones that are not too thick since these can add volume to your lower half, and they can feel too hot on summer days. On the other hand, choose ones that are not too thin or are made of a flimsy material since they tend to look baggy or saggy after a few washes.

If you like a more minimal aesthetic, choose mid-weight ones in black, navy, or light gray, and ensure that there are no prints, visible labels, or logos.

Wear your sweat shorts with a graphic tee for a simple yet stylish outfit, and do a half-tuck to give you some shape. Wear sneakers or slides, and you’re ready to hang out and play computer games with your friends.

For running errands, pair your sweat shorts with a tank top in a similar color, then wear an open chambray shirt over it. Add a baseball cap, sneakers, a tote or waist bag, and a few leather and metal bracelets.

Want to wear your sweat shorts while cycling or jogging around the block? Try creating your own take on an athleisure ensemble with your sweat shorts. Pair it with a hoodie or a crewneck sweatshirt in a matching color. Finish the look with sneakers and a smartwatch.

Final Words

The right pair of women’s shorts can make you feel comfortable and look fabulous at the same time. It’s all about accessorizing and finding your aesthetic. From denim shorts to leather styles, consider adding these types of shorts to your wardrobe to look stylish daily!
