    • Yes, if it were a more playful shoot then I’d agree with you. It’s just, the dullness and lack of great depth sort of create a hazy outlook, like on an overcast day. Which I think is the perfect environment for the styling. It flows so well with the grunge mood.

      • You’ll find that almost every shoot in New Zealand magazines (which No. is one of) has this same dull, dull lighting. I don’t think it’s a technique – it’s just lack of skill. I’m from New Zealand and I’m sick of the amateur lighting – I was glad that someone here picked up on it!

        • OH MY GOSH Lois, what a relief to hear someone else state the truth! It’s a lack of technique – Karen may be a good stylist but she was never a photographer and never has been, she cannot light at all. It is just the tip of the iceberg of what you could say about this – but lets say it is all compounded by shoots like NO having NO budget…. and there is more to go into but it’s probably better I shut up. I am in NZ too if you are looking for someone to work with repost with a contact email maybe…. I am sorry but there is such a love-in around this town for people who don’t have an eye.

          • obviously some bitter photographer that works for likes of remix and wishes they worked for no. gross get a life and put your name to your hatred.

          • Karen doesn’t do her own lighting.
While I agree, NZ/NO. Mag tend to follow along the same lines with shoots (always grunge, always daylight lit, always some 16year old looking model in an alternative lifestyle. Over it.

          • also Eatblonde,
To work for Remix you’d actually get paid. I dont’ know why you’d assume No. is better than Remix.

          • dont comment on things you know nothing about! , who are you to comment? and f.y.i karen happens to be one of nz top photographers making a living and working internationally, i am embarrassed to be a nzer when there are people like you venting your hate. i think you are jealous, plain and simple, would love to know what you do for a living, starbucks maybe? if you think you can do better i dare you to post some of your work, i doubt you would have the cred to make it on to an international site like this.

          • I think there is some serious comment rage going on here! I don’t understand why people personally insult someone for simply holding a different opinion. bisr wasn’t venting hate, he or she acknowledges that Inderbitzen-Waller is a good stylist but doesn’t think she lights well. What is the problem here?
It is off-the-mark to confuse jealousy and hatred with being a discerning fan of fashion.

And if it’s such an important factor, my real name is Eleanor Woodhouse and I can put a name to an opinion.

          • Dear Lois, thank you for appreciating the words I actually wrote. Dear Eatblonde/Eva: thanks for confirming my point.
The person I respect most in NZ fash photographers is Stephen Tilley and I don’t think he has ever had an editorial on here and he gets paid, is international, knows how to make something look good, has been doing it for a lot longer than KI-W and seems to work hard and is in control of his craft. I even respect dirty derek hendo, at least he has some chops. Some people always bring up wishy-washy words like ‘negative thinking’ and call someone a ‘hater’ or whatever redundant terms you want to use if they don’t agree with what everyone is supposed to think… can comments only be positive? Isn’t that kind of dumb and reflective of something? Isn’t there a place for criticality? I doubt Karen reads this, too busy living her life so she is not going to be injured… so what are you defending exactly? What do you feel is threatened? Some junior-high school girls social order? I am allowed my opinion but as long as the world is run on petty stuff like your comments prove and not on the quality of the work then I doubt having my name in the open would result in anything remotely fair. You like it, fine, I like eating mcdonalds sometimes but it doesn’t mean it is good food – evaluation is part of being a grown up and at least a necessary element of taste.
(p.s. I am sure you are lovely people, it’s just a bit of lazy thinking is all, maybe consider this and have a lovely new year)

  1. Her name is actually Cece Yost, not Yoost 🙂
but i also love these pictures, so much emotion in each shot and i love that yellow kitchen. Perfect composition.

  3. wow i had heard about the tall poppies syndrome before but this is demonstrated it for me; there must be a lot of bitter photographers who cannot get work in new zealand,
what a tireade of nasty comments from disgruntled wannabes. i have no doubt in my opinion that this shoot would not be on such a site if it wasn’t amazing, and it is.

  4. Amidst the chicken stench, filth and the grunge the model remains pure with her snow white flawless beauty. Great job by all !
